What Hairdressers Can Teach Us About Marketing

You never know where you might find marketing inspiration.

The other day, as I sat down at my hairdresser, I was treated to a masterclass in understanding clients and delivering what they actually want.

Before she even picked up the scissors, she asked me a bunch of questions:

“You live by the beach, do you swim very often?”

“It’s summer, are you planning on going lighter?”

“How much time do you spend on your hair each morning?”

What felt like a casual chat was instead a very deliberate way to understand my situation and achieve a result I’d be thrilled about – something that’s essential not just in a salon, but also in the world of marketing.

Why questions matter

When you’re looking for a marketing agency, it’s a good idea to ensure they give you the “hairdresser treatment” (minus the blow-dry, of course).

If you’re not being asked thoughtful, considered questions about your business, your day-to-day concerns and the type of marketing support you need (or worse: you’re not being asked any questions at all), then they won’t fully understand the intricacies of what you’re after – leading to disappointment down the track.

We’ve all walked out of a salon with a bad cut. But, luckily, hair grows quickly.

What’s harder to fix is a marketing relationship that isn’t working and doesn’t make your brand look as shiny and beautiful as it should.
