The email that cried wolf

Don’t let your emails fall on deaf ears

There was once a well-meaning business owner who cried wolf.

He sent two polite but unnecessary emails. Nothing urgent, nothing important, just things that probably didn’t need to be sent.

When the third email came around, it actually mattered. It was time-sensitive and deserved a reply.

But the damage was done. His clients had tuned out. They assumed it was more noise and ignored it.

And so, his project got metaphorically torn apart by wolves.

This isn’t really about email marketing…

It’s about getting your actual clients to reply faster.

Because when they open their inbox and see 40 unread emails, they’re not carefully going through them one by one. They scan. Some messages stand out. Most don’t.

Here’s what helps:

1. Add some personality to your subject line.

We once used “Purple Monkey Dishwasher.” It was odd, but the client was a Simpsons fan – and it worked.

2. Make your “ask” obvious.

If someone can’t tell what you want within ten seconds, they’ll skip it.

Cut the fluff and skip straight to the good part!

3. Try video (seriously).

Sometimes it’s easier to talk. A 45-second Loom where you explain what you need or walk through a document can save everyone a lot of time.

4. Ask yourself: did this really need to be an email?

If your last few messages have been low-value, you’ve trained people to ignore you. So when something is finally urgent, they won’t notice.

That’s the boy who cried wolf. Except this time, it’s your email getting eaten.

Faster replies start with better habits. Simple as that.
