Client gifts and freebies are a hot topic.
Especially around Christmas or when welcoming new clients. I have received — and given — many gifts over the years, so today I am going to break down what I think makes a good freebie.
Why am I thinking of this?
Well, recently I came across a laptop sleeve — promoted as a freebie with Cheezels (yes, those delicious cheese-flavoured crisps).
It’s pretty cute and well-made, but is this really a good freebie for a chip company?
Reflecting your brand
The gift you give represents and reflects your brand and business.
For example, if you’re a luxury brand, your client gift needs to scream quality. Now that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank with a fancy spa voucher or something over-the-top.
But a cheap, flimsy pen that breaks on the first use? Not ideal when you’re providing high-end services.
Quite simply: the gift or freebie has to match the standard of your business.
Relevance is key
Next, think about what the gift says about your business. Is it something that ties in with what you do or resonates with your clients?
When choosing a freebie, ask yourself: “What do I want my clients to remember about me?”
- If your business is fun and creative, a quirky gift like a laptop sleeve from a chip company might be just the ticket.
- Alternatively, if your brand is more traditional, you might opt for something more aligned with your industry’s expectations.
Know your audience
This is where your ideal client work comes in. You need to know who your clients are and what appeals to them. You might not have the luxury of hand-selecting a gift for every individual, but understanding your client’s needs and tastes will guide your choice.
For example, I like to sometimes give my clients packets of crisps; choosing the flavour that they like or represents them. It’s a playful nod to our name, but it also shows that we’re thinking about them in a fun, light-hearted way.
So, Is This a Good Freebie?
I’m genuinely curious — does a laptop sleeve freebie from Cheezels strike you as a clever, thoughtful gift, or is it just too random for a chip company?
The right client gift should leave a positive impression, reflect your brand’s values, and show that you care.
At the end of the day, it isn’t just about the gift itself; it’s about the message it sends. If the gift aligns with your business’s identity and makes your clients feel valued, then you’re on the right track.
